The Lass With Wingsby ~JoelChua

In Tagalog: Ang Mutyang May Pakpak.
This is an illustration taken from the story by the late Filipino children's writer Rene Villanueva. The story was published only in the papers.

Our organization "Ang INK" held its 18th Annual Exhibit: Forever Renever and featured several such works that were taken from Mr. Villanueva "unillustrated" stories. This was done in tribute for the man.

I took to making the wings mentioned in the story as devices because in the story - a farmer steals a pair and pretty much seduces the youngest of the three ladies. Gets her pregnant and all that.

The exhibit will be running until the end of November 2009. At the CCP Little Theater.

The approach for this piece was to press a more graphic appearance. Much less focus on the turning / sculpting of form and more focus on the composition, getting particular areas to stay within their value and not to introduce strong shadow. Thus it feels lighter than my other digital paintings. I also made it a point to keep the color palette light.
